CCHD Classes

Classes &
Workshops FAQs

What types of classes does CCHD offer?
CCHD offers classes throughout the year on a variety of topics of interest to parents, professionals, adults with hearing loss and their families, and those interested in learning more about hearing loss or sign language.  For a full listing of upcoming classes and events, view our Calendar.

Can anyone take classes at CCHD?
Although many classes are specifically designed for those directly affected by hearing loss, including parents of d/Deaf and hard of hearing children, the majority of classes offered by CCHD are open to anyone in the community who is interested in attending.

Are CCHD sign classes the same as those offered at colleges?
CCHD sign classes tend to be less formal and more moderately paced than those offered through local colleges, recognizing that many people in the community are interested in learning sign language for personal or professional reasons, but do not necessarily intend to become professional interpreters. CCHD offers classes for all skill levels, and keeps class sizes small to ensure maximum interaction with the teacher.

Are your sign classes for someone who already knows some sign language?
No.  The ASL I and Communicating with Kids in Sign classes offered at CCHD are designed for individuals with no prior experience with sign language.  While participants may have a very personal reason for wanting to learn sign language, many are simply interested in learning a new language, or hope to enhance their professional skills by learning some basic signs.  Advanced classes are offered for those who have completed a beginning sign class at CCHD or elsewhere and who wish to become more fluent in ASL.

Who teaches your sign language classes?
ASL classes at CCHD are usually taught by a Deaf adult who uses sign language as their primary method of communication.

Are accommodations such as ALD's and sign interpreters available for classes?
Yes, CCHD is committed to making our classes and workshops accessible to as many people as possible, and can provide assistive listening devices and other accommodations as needed upon request.  For most classes and events, accommodations must be requested at least one week in advance.

Are there any age requirements for your classes?
CCHD offers a variety of classes for all age groups and some classes may be more appropriate for certain age ranges.  Please review the description for each class to find out if any age restrictions apply.  American Sign Language classes I - III are not recommended for children younger than high school.

Can you provide classes at my workplace/organization?
CCHD may be able to provide some classes or workshops at your workplace or organization for a fee.  Fees are based on location and class/workshop requested.  To find out about availability and pricing for your group, please call 414-604-7202 or email kmalak@cchdwi.org
